We currently have a pandemic going on throughout our world. There is no vaccine to prevent people from getting it. It doesn’t affect infants and small children in the same way it does those who are older. All of us are living daily with the threat of being exposed. Though we try to stay away from it, there is really no safe place in which to shelter to one hundred percent keep from being infected. Some people’s symptoms are worse than others. Many have already died and thousands will continue to die from this awful plague.
People are having a problem agreeing about this pandemic. Some do not believe it is all that bad. Others are very concerned and doing everything in their power to take precautions against it. The so-called experts disagree over how to treat it. Some say one thing will work and others recommend something totally opposite. Really, because there is so much information out there some people automatically tune out when they hear it mentioned. They don’t want to hear anything about it. They would rather bury their head in the sand as if it did not exist.
To the chagrin of some, while at the same time to the delight of others, I personally have publicly spoken about what people should do about this pandemic. I can tell you one thing, it is really difficult to get a lot of people to believe what I say. Some have said I do not know what I am talking about. Some outright dismiss me as some sort of kook. Others get angry and say things like, “Nobody is going to tell me what I can or can not do.” Still others are quite adamant that they will never do what they have been told they should do. They make it clear that some “experts” (often meaning their family members and friends or something they read on the internet) say, “These things will never work and it is quite foolish to even suggest anyone should do them.”
After talking with others and hearing what they say or seeing what they have written, a lot of folks are convinced the higher powers and their minions have planned some major conspiracy. After all, they have “rights.” They have always been able to do as they please. They believe others are plotting to steal their rights. They threaten open rebellion and incite others to join them.
Whether you agree with me or not one thing is certain. Time will tell who is right. The real problem is that for some it will be too late. All hope will have passed them by. Because they will not listen, there will be absolutely nothing that even the greatest Physician can do to heal them. They will have died. No one will be happy about it. There will be no gloating. They will tragically be sentenced by God to eternal punishment.
Oh, wait! I’m sorry. You thought I was talking about that other pan-demic? Strange you thought that. Were it not so sad, it would be funny how people react so similarly in regard to both. But, in reality, I was talking about the pandemic called sin! Sin is sometimes referred to in scripture as a putrid disease in need of a healing physician (cf. Luke 5:30-32).
Long ago Solomon wrote: “What has been is what will be, and what has been done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun” (Ecclesiastes 1:9). People always have, and always will, react to the things they face in the same ways. Sadly, the majority always reacts in the wrong way—stubbornly clamoring for their “rights” and championing open defiance. This is true whether it be in regard to sin or some other situation with which they are faced. It is the obligation of every person to react in a way that pleases God, not self!
Let’s not forget the global pandemic called sin. As Christians, our duty is to reach a lost world. We are to exhibit Christ in our own lives and point the way to Him—no matter what is going on around us!
